Ravenswood Hall was alive with celebration.
Sir Edward Ravenscroft had invited family, friends and business associates to mark his seventieth birthday. The evening was a lavish affair, complete with fine dining, champagne and live music.
As coffee was served, Sir Edward announced he had one final surprise.
He invited his guests onto the grand balcony overlooking the estate gardens.
Raising a glass, he stepped forward to begin his speech.
“I want to thank you all for joining me this evening—”
Suddenly, there was a sharp cracking sound.
The ornate balcony railing gave way beneath him.
Guests screamed as Sir Edward plunged onto the stone terrace twenty feet below.
He was killed instantly.
At first, everyone believed it had been a tragic accident.
The balcony was old. Ravenswood Hall itself was nearly three centuries old.
But Detective Charlotte Finch soon discovered something alarming.
Several bolts securing the railing had been deliberately loosened.
This was no accident.
Someone had planned Sir Edward’s death.
The Suspects
Amelia Ravenscroft – The Daughter
Amelia had recently discovered that her father intended to leave the majority of his fortune to various charities rather than family members.
Several guests had overheard a heated argument between them earlier that week.
She claimed she had spent most of the afternoon helping staff arrange decorations inside the hall.
Daniel Mercer – The Estate Manager
Daniel had managed Ravenswood Hall for fifteen years.
Recently, Sir Edward had begun questioning discrepancies in the estate accounts.
Staff members reported that Daniel feared dismissal.
He claimed he had spent the afternoon inspecting farmland on the far side of the estate.
Olivia Hart – The Event Planner
Olivia had organised every detail of the birthday celebration.
Her role gave her unrestricted access throughout the property.
She insisted she had spent most of the afternoon coordinating caterers and suppliers.
Richard Cole – The Business Partner
Richard and Sir Edward jointly owned several successful businesses.
Detectives learned that relations between the two men had become increasingly strained in recent months.
Richard stated that he had spent the afternoon playing golf with several guests.
The Clues
- The balcony railing had been secured by four large bolts.
- Three of the bolts had been deliberately loosened.
- The work would have taken only a few minutes using a standard spanner.
- The balcony railing had been painted green only three days earlier.
- Daniel Mercer had been carrying a toolbox earlier that day.
- Detectives found a spanner inside the toolbox with traces of matching green paint on its handle.
- A torn page from Sir Edward’s revised will was discovered in Amelia Ravenscroft’s bedroom waste bin.
- Amelia admitted she had read the will shortly before the party
- Richard Cole’s golf partners confirmed he had spent the afternoon with them.
- Caterers confirmed Olivia Hart had remained in the kitchen and reception areas throughout most of the day.
Have You Solved It?
Take a moment to examine the evidence before reading on.
The Solution
The list of suspects offered no shortage of motives.
Amelia stood to lose a substantial inheritance.
Richard’s business relationship with Sir Edward was deteriorating.
Olivia had unrestricted access to the hall.
Yet Detective Finch focused on the physical evidence.
The killer needed access to the balcony before the party began.
They also needed the right tools.
Most importantly, they needed an opportunity to tamper with the railing unnoticed.
Only one suspect met all three requirements.
Daniel Mercer.
A witness had seen him alone on the balcony during the afternoon.
He possessed the necessary tools.
And the fresh green paint found on the loosened bolts provided the crucial clue.
The railing had only recently been painted.
Anyone tampering with the bolts would almost certainly disturb the fresh paint.
When detectives examined Daniel’s toolbox, they found a spanner carrying traces of the same paint.
Faced with the evidence, Daniel’s story began to crumble.
He eventually confessed.
Sir Edward had uncovered irregularities in the estate accounts and intended to dismiss him after the birthday celebrations.
Desperate to protect himself, Daniel loosened the bolts, knowing Sir Edward would lean against the railing during his speech.
“It was supposed to look like an accident,” he admitted quietly.
Detective Finch nodded.
“Instead, it became a murder investigation.”
Daniel Mercer was arrested and charged with the murder of Sir Edward Ravenscroft.
Did You Solve It?
Did the paint on the spanner reveal the killer, or were you distracted by the family dispute and business tensions?
